I did not read the first book in this series, but the author touches upon it during this story. Kylie, and 18 year old American backpacker is drugged, kidnapped, and then sold into slavery while in Bangkok. Leine, is a former assassin, who now heads an agency that tracks and exposes human trafficking. Turns out that Kylie is the daughter of Leine's friend from her former life who contacts Leine and asked for her help. Leine leaves immediately for Bangkok to start the search. What she didn't count on was to be captured by the same group that took Kylie and was now headed to Africa in a cell with another prisoner - an African Poacher. Together, they plot their escape from the container ship.Once in Africa, they begin a search to find Kylie and return to the U.S. Their trek across country is a learning experience for the two of them and for readers who learn about life in that country. Their search is hazardous as they move across country - the notorious slave trader only has to spread a few dollars around to have open eyes and ears everywhere. It is a great help to have acquaintances around who help the duo along on their journey.
When Kylie is finally located, the duo find that they are terribly outgunned and their successful rescue highly improbable. The Chinese trader is a formidable foe who seemed to have every base covered. He is brutal and without a conscience...only money talks.
This is a stand-alone story so there isn't a cliff hanger at the end to temp readers into purchasing the next installment. Even as a series, I'm assuming that each book will be a different mission, and will most likely purchase the next one to see what Leine gets involved in next.

To say that I am a fan of Ms. Berkom would be an understatement. I just finished "CARGO" which me took me two days to read. I just couldn't put it down. She is not an artist but she painted many scenes which brought the story to a satisfactory conclusion. Having a sister-in-law who takes groups to Africa for Photo Safaris is the way that Africa should be viewed. Ms Berkom describes in sad detail some of the current problems as part of the background story.
As an artist I love animals and have painted many of them. Here are two!
The story is fast-paced and well-written all the way through. From start to finish, it grabs you and takes you on a journey with both Leine and Kylie. It’s fascinating to see how resourceful Leine is and how she can leave any situation with just the clothes on her back and still come out ahead. Kylie’s part in the story, too, really helped to ratchet the tension up, as you’re never sure what’s going to happen to her next.
I really can’t recommend this book enough. It was a great, fast read with plenty of action, a smart plot, and fantastic characters. What more can you really ask for in a book? Now that I’ve read this one, I’m excited to check out the other books in the series, too!
This book races through three continents and is interesting and fun throughout. It also deals with some tough subjects and is quite educational about the difficulties of policing horrible crimes, in impoverished places. People who are poor will do what they have to to feed their families. Corruption is a huge problem all over, but where bribes and kick backs are accepted as part of the culture, it's rampant. Poaching and smuggling of Ivory, exotic eastern remedies, and trafficking in people are the focus of this action packed book with a kicka$$ heroine, working to save people and endangered animals from absolute evil. It's a thriller with a moral compass.
This is the 1st novel, I've read by D.V. Berkom + won't be the last.

A difficult book to put down.
D V Berkom has delivered another kick ass adventure with out favorite former assassin Leine Basso. Berkom deals with hot button contemporary issues such as child trafficking, serial killers, wildlife poaching, and illegal organ traders. The action begins when the spoiled daughter of a friend goes missing. Leine is soon on the case. And she's going to crash into more bad guys than you can shake a stick at. This is a rapid paced thriller that takes the reader to a wide range of exotic locations that are described with great authenticity. Turn your phone off, find a cozy chair and settle in for a wild adventure.
